Pan’s People – Monster Mash

Top of the Pops, 27 September 1973: Pan’s People dance to Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt Kickers again.

Top of the Pops, 13 September 1973: Pan’s People dance to Monster Mash by Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt Kickers.

A mere snippet of this version, with only a few brief glimpses of PP.

Thanks to and ASmK & Andeebee for the YouTube posts.

From the old blog, Saturday 30 October 2010:

Here’s a couple of special treats for the Halloween season: not just a clip of Pan’s People dancing to Monster Mash: two clips!. The first will probably be the most familiar: the girls in monster-movie themed fancy dress. Louise get the easy option as a sort of tap-dancing vampire. Deedee is an egyptian mummy with a twenties flavour. Cherry is the cutest bat you’ve ever seen. Ruth draws the short straw in the gorilla outfit as King Kong. And I just can’t make out what Babs in meant to be: an alien car-hop?

The second is an earlier clip, from the time when Top of the Pops regularly commisioned and created short films to show where the artists werenโ€™t available to perform in the studio. Here, amidst various kooky spooky goings on, Pan’s People dance around in a vaulted basement wearing sexy Morticia-Adams-type outfits. Merely a small taste in this incomplete clip, I’m afraid, but it’s all I can find.

Pans People โ€“ Summertime City

TOTP, 4th September 1975 Pans People dance to, and Mike Batt sings, Summertime City.

Great minds think alike: Alongside Lou Reed (in the Velvet Underground’s “There She Goes Again“), Mike pinched the bridging hook he used here (at the end of the introduction and of each chorus) from Marvin Gaye’s 1963 US hit Hitch Hike (as covered by the Stones).

Pan’s People – I Think of You

Top of the Pops 31 August 1973:
Pan’s People dance to I Think of You by the Detroit Emeralds.

Every time I get despondent and think “That’s it! I’ll never get another new routine to share,” another generous soul proves me wrong. Hurrah!

An what a great routine this is: it’s oozing with literal choreography – which is a good thing. (If you don’t like literal choreography, go away and look at a Ballet Rambert site or something.) My favourite bit of literal? Louise pointing to her biceps for the line “makes me strong” (0:32).

All the dancers seem to be enjoying this light hearted routine, particularly Dee Dee’s faux forgetfullness. The whole thing feels well-rehearsed and tightly executed.

The outfits are great, but as usual my clothing vocabularly is sadly not up to a proper description. Flamenco trousers perhaps? But they’re one-piece: so flamenco catsuits? Surely not flamenco dungarees? And what do you call the scarf bra bit? I’m flailing around here, language-wise. Will some knowledgable person please comment and correct me?

Many thanks to the anonymous donor who supplied this marvelous bit of Pan’s People history.

Ruby Flipper – Morning Glory

Top of the Pops, 26/08/1976: Ruby Flipper dance to Morning Glory by James and Bobby Purify.

Well of course Sue, Patti and Lulu are looking lovely here: but Cherry, in that fuchsia & gold outfit looks absolutely fabulous. What a fine routine. My favourite moment? Patti’s mock-admonishing wagging finger at 0’38”.

Kudos to Phil for carrying off those silver wellies, too.

Thanks to Andeebee for the YouTube post.

Ruby Flipper – Don’t Go Breaking My Heart

Top of the Pops, 26 August 1976: Ruby Flipper dance to Don’t Go Breaking My Heart by Elton John & Kiki Dee

Thanks to panspeople.com for the youtube post.

From the old blog, Sunday, 30 January 2011

As requested by Carl, here’s Ruby Flipper – Don’t Go Breaking My Heart. Since there’s wearing the same outfits as the previously posted Morning Glory routine, it’s no surprise that this is from the same TOTP episode (26-8-1976). Such fabulous costumes: Cherry should always wear purple and gold.

Thank you YMG; an absolute classic of a song.
This is one of those rare routines that focuses quite a bit on the audience. They are a mixed bunch aren’t they? Some of them are a bit lethargic in their willingness to dance, while others get into the spirit and make much more of an effort. The Flipsters are wearing some of their best costumes on this (erm apart from Philip- can’t stand those wellies, sorry)
It’s really nice towards the end when Ruby Flipper are doing their high kicking and the audience are all joining in. Watching this always makes me feel good.

I agree, a real feel-good routine and thank goodness they resisted that awful temptation to grab someone from the audience. It might have been risky for the girls to try this in those costumes anyway! (Philip would have been relatively safe though)

I always like to look out for Noels desperate attempts to chat up the audience girls during this performance, what a loser.
I also dig the choreography, or should i say lack of it in this routine. I suppose it reflected the easy going nature of that golden summer. Oh and i must not forget to give princess cutie pie a mention, cant make my mind up which RF shoot she looks the cutist in, ive narrowed it down to about 10.
Sue v Lulu in this period of time, what a choice. God am i starting to waver here. No its got to be Sue, i think.

i like this dance routine but i agree it does lack a bit more choreography but then they had done their main performance with morning glory this end routine was just used as a fill in cos they had showed elton and kiki video for what seemed to be the whole of 76 summer and decided to involve the audience a bit more for this episode

A feel good song and dance which never fails to make me smile.Natural dancing, which I love to see, with a great atmosphere in the studio where everybody seems to be having a good time. A perfect recipe to cheer any ones day up. A priceless post. Benja ๐Ÿ™‚

Pan’s People – You Make Me Feel Brand New

Top of the Pops 15th August 1974: Pan’s People dance to You Make Me Feel Brand New by The Stylistics.

From a show guest-presented by The Osmonds. Pan’s People are so stunning in these lovely backless frocks, it’s hardly surprising that they even tempt a goody-two-shoes like Donnie into impure thoughts.

Update, 17 August 2018: Thanks to forum-regular Vintage Videos, here’s a much-improved, timecode-free version of this routine.

Pan’s People – When Will I See You Again

Top of the Pops, 8 August 1974: Pan’s People dance to The Three Degrees’ When Will I See You Again.

Classically glamourous posh black sequinned frocks for our dancers here: which is entirely apt for this sophisticated pop gem, performed by the Three Degrees โ€“ who were themselves no strangers to classy showbiz couture.

Another improved version of a previously posted clip: Pan’s People dance to the Three Degrees’ When Will I See You Again on TOTP.

Thanks to Andeebee for the YouTube post, and German satallite channel EinsFestival for the broadcast.

Right where do i start with this one. First of all great song. Now the impotant stuff. Which period of time does Sue look the best in. Could be this pre RF/L&CO time. She makes Babs and the others look rather old, don’t you thin?. She’s just 18, and on the way to 7 glorious years as the best dancer on the box, and of course the sexiest. Look out for the final scene as this young goddess is the last to approach the camera, sheer bliss for me, my fave Sue moment ever.

UPDATE. I watch this performance at least once a day every day. I never tire of it, i just am so grateful to the goddess that is Sue Menhenick for giving us 7 years of her life to blokes like me, so that we can just stare into a computer screen and marvel at her beauty. I will never tire also of writing these small tributes: so sorry you lot out there, thats the way of things.

Pan’s People – You Can Do Magic

Top of the Pops, 3 August 1973: Pan’s People dance to You Can Do Magic by Limmie & Family Cookin’.

Hooray! Here’s another rare Pan’s People performance, Thanks to one of my generous anonymous donors.

A happy, energetic performance, with simple video overlay effects multiplying the dancers, invoking the “Magic” in the song title. This clip is only black & white, where the original broadcast would have been in colour: but the limited dark background, and the strong geometric diamond pattern of their off-the-shoulder dresses makes the performance easily watchable.

There are a few seconds missing from the end of the number (and perhaps one or two at the start): but since we’ed probably never get a chance to see this performance otherwise, I’m most grateful to the nameless provider. Many thanks.
