Pan’s People – Theme from The Persuaders

Top of the Pops 20 January 1972
Pan’s People perform to Theme from The Persuaders by John Barry.

Thanks to to supermullers for the YouTube post.

From the old blog, Tuesday, 28 December 2010:

By request from Ryan, here’s clip from back when the TOTP budget stretched to occasional location filming for Pan’s People routines. Here they are in a Rolls, driving to the casino, smoking cigars and wearing fedoras, to John Barry’s Theme from The Persuaders.

Pan’s People – We’ve Only Just Begun

Top of the Pops, 14 January 1971:
Pan’s People dance to We’ve Only Just Begun by The Carpenters

From the old blog, Saturday, 23 October 2010:

We haven’t seen any Pan’s People here for ages: to remedy that, here they are dancing to We’ve Only Just Begun by the Carpenters, from a recent TOTP2 repeat.

Going by the maxi-length frocks, the patterns and colours, and the fact the Andi and Flick are still in the group, I’d guess this was from 1970. Oh wait, look: it says “Jan 1971” right there on the clip. Duh.

Pan’s People – Itchycoo Park

Top of the Pops, 8 January 1976:
Pan’s People dance to Itchycoo Park by The Small Faces.

Late period Pan’s People relive the sixties dancing to a Small Faces classic, around a giant mushroom, wearing groovy crocheted shawls. Topped and tailed with Noel Edmonds demonstrating that he truly was the TOTP Bad Pun Champion.

Thanks top Andeebee for the YouTube post (and to Vintage Video who supplied him with the clip).

Pan’s People – Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me

Elton John’s Don’t let the Sun go Down on Me was at the very beginning of my time working with PP and Flick gave me a long, quite balletic/contemporary style solo for the verse…..I have never been so nervous as I was then in my whole life , I remember shaking like a leaf before, during and after the routine. The other ladies were so supportive and kind to me….it sure helped ! Sadly, I believe that number has been wiped….but a big memory for me as my first official solo with PP.
Sue Menhenick, 2011

Well, thanks to a generous christmas gift from Sue and forum regular PansLegs, we now have a partial version of this long lost routine to enjoy:

Merry Christmas folks, and thanks again to Sue and Panlegs for this treat.

Pan’s People – Help Me Make it Through the Night

TOTP 02 January 1975: Pan’s People dance to John Holt’s Help Me Make it Through the Night.

From the old blog: Wednesday, 2 September 2009:

Jimmy Saville and a rather stupid Australian sailor with a big proverbial ginger beard introduce Pan’s People dancing to John Holt’s Help Me Make it Through the Night: a Kris Kristofferson song.

Pan’s People – Green River

Top of the Pops 1st January 1970. A marvellous start to the seventies, as Pan’s People dance to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Green River.

From the old blog, Friday, 7 September 2012

Pan’s People dance to Creedence Clearwater Revival’s Green River. I posted a low-quality version of this performance last year, and hoped against hope that someone somewhere would come forward with a better version. Well, hallelujah! Someone just posted this much better version on YouTube. Thanks gibb1962, whoever you are!

It’s clearly a rehearsal performance, not the broadcast one. But who cares: and check out those silver gogo boots! Woohoo!

As I intimated on my Louise Compilation comment, this is my favourite of Flick’s early ‘Go-go’ routines. It is just wonderful – combining a great song with some real movement. Also, the girls really put some effort in, despite it being (I think) a rehearsal take? Great to see Andi get it wrong on a couple of occasions yet pick it up instantly.

…what a powerhouse performance this is. Louise is just a wild woman. When Andi stops it’s like she can’t take any more G-force and has to take a break. Great stuff

Pan’s People – In Dulce Jubilo

Top of the Pops, 1 January 1976: Pan’s People dance to Mike Oldfield’s In Dulce Jubilo

A suitably folksy routine, since this Mike Oldfield number is a traditional folk tune electrified. Plenty of gusto.

Pan’s People – Jeepster

Top of the Pops, 30 December 1971: Pan’s People dance to Jeepster by T-Rex.

I’ve got two different versions of this performance. The first (Above) is a good quality version from TOTP2, marred with their usual “interesting” comments graphics.

The second is a time-coded version including brief interviews with Pan’s People and Ed “Stewpot” Stewart, in a rakish eyepatch. Unfortunately, there’s no audio during the interviews, but we do see that lucky old Stewpot gets a kiss from each of the girls (except Flick). Judging by the timecode breaks, Ed’s behavious and the brief snatches of other artists, these interviews were dotted around that week’s show, between songs.

Pan’s People – Stoney End

Top of the Pops, 30 December 1971:
Pan’s People dance to Stoney End by Barbara Streisand.

From their famous visit to HMS Triumph in 1971, in Momabsa. Of course if we tried to repeat this today, now that we’re sharing aircraft carriers with France, Pan’s People would have to share the ship with Les Claudettes.

From the old blog, Tuesday, 28 June 2011:

Here are Pan’s People proving the strategic importance of having an aircraft carrier in your fleet. Where else are they going to be able to Dance to Barbra Streisand’s Stoney End properly? Oh, and you need a decent-sized submarine, too.

Many thanks to VintageVideos, who sent me this improved version of the clip: from TOTP, 30-12-1971

Many thanks YMG although I’m not sure I can get fully onboard with the setting for this one.
Better refrain from any puns about the sub as I know it would only get me into deep water.
