Pans People – The Entertainer

Pan’s People dance to “The Entertainer” by Marvin Hamlisch. Top of the Pops, 18-04-74.

Here’s a clip I first posted on the old blog in October 2014, not long before the Copyright Gestapo shut it down. Alas, the wonderful archive.org, where I’ve been digging up gems from my old posts, only have the resources to scan each of the world’s web sites every few months: consequently they have no record of my last few months of posts for me to resurrect.

Top of the Pops was always more about “what’s popular” than “what’s cool”: which often made for an eclectic collection of whatever happened to be in the charts. So when The Sting was such a big hit movie ion 1974, this version of Scott Joplin’s theme music was a surprise hit, and Pan’s People got a chance to display their versatility.

Many thanks to the generous donor, who asked to remain anonymous.

Just thought I’d leave you a message to say keep up the great work with this blog. I was a teen in the 70’s so you have now made an old dad very happy. I’ve been searching all over the internet for Pans People for years and these clips here are great, the best I have found. Thanks ;o)

Pan’s People – Theme from ‘Mahogany’ (Do You Know Where You’re Going To?)

Top of the Pops, 15 April 1976 Pan’s People dance to Do You Know Where You’re Going To? by Diana Ross, theme song for her 1975 film, “Mahogany”.

Cherry, Mary, Ruth and Sue all look sombre as they wander around an uninspired set made up of big white unadorned blocks, a wintery leafless tree, and some moody muslin fabric.

I’ve never seen the film: by all accounts it wasn’t up to much. As bad as The Wiz, perhaps? I doubt it would be as much fun to watch as that glorious folly.

Pan’s People – Homely Girl

TOTP, 4 April 1974: Pan’s People dance to the Chi-lites Homely Girl.

From the old blog, Monday 26 July 2010:

I’m surprised I haven’t got around to posting this little gem of literal choreography until now. To celebrate my return to life with a third post in one day, here’s Pan’s People transforming from dungarees and marker-pen freckles (“Homely Girl”) to fur-fringed baby-doll nighties and silver slippers (“You’re a beautiful woman’). To the music of the Chi-lites.

Thanks once again to Einsfestival for the rebroadcast.

Pan’s People – Jungle Rock

Top of the Pops, April 1st 1976: Pan’s People dance to Hank Mizell’s Jungle Rock.

One of the rare few songs that both Pan’s People and Legs & Co. have danced to, this performance is much more substantial than Legs & Co’s loose festive reprise in the Christmas episode later that year. Some neat choreography here, and the on-safari victorian explorer outfits are pretty cute. Some nice dancing from the animals too.

Pan’s People – Yesterday

Top of the Pops, 25 march 1976: Pan’s People dance to The Beatles’ Yesterday.

From the old blog, Friday, 26 August 2011:

Yet another generous contribution from PattiforPM: here are Pan’s People dancing to the Fab Four’s Yesterday, part of the great Beatles reissued-singles chart onslaught of 1976.

Thanks P4PM, another late PP treat, dont remember this dance first time round. Like the imaginative choreography with the large circular steps and love Cherrys dead pan stare at 1.17 also. All super stuff.

Like Ryan I like the choreography; the costumes, now that’s another matter.

I too love Cherry’s commanding performance here. The costumes are a little strange, perhaps biblical grass skirts but I’m not sure. Where’s Ms Emmapeelpants our resident fashionista when we need her?

Pan’s People – What Am I Gonna Do with You

Top of the Pops, 20 March 1975:
Pan’s People dance to What Am I Gonna Do with You by Barry White.

Pan’s People in posh white frocks dance to a classic romantic rumble from the “Walrus of Love”.

An example of the unpredictability of dry-ice: at times the clouds of carbon dioxide threaten to engulf the dancers entirely.

Thanks to Andeebee for the YouTube post.
