Pan’s People – You’re So Vain

Top of the Pops, February 1 1973: Pan’s People dance to Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain.

pan’s People play gossiping partygoers, sitting on and dancing around a chaise lounge.

This is another routine often cited by those critical of “literal choreography”. Myself, I can’t get too worked up. Given the subject matter, the whole second-person-singular critical nature of the lyric, I think integrating mime as a large proportion of the choreography is entirely apt. Nice posh party frocks too.

Thanks to Andeebee for the Dailymotion post.

Pan’s People – Star on a TV Show

Pan’s People – I Can’t Give You Anything

Top of the Pops Christmas Day Special, 25 December 1975:
Pan’s people dance to the Stylistics’ I Can’t Give You Anything

A classic christmas-themed routine, as Pan’s People perform in giant ribbon-bow outfits on a giant wrapped christmas present. Plenty of Busby Berkeley style birds-eye view shots.

From the old blog, Saturday, 9 May 2009:

Pan’s People on the Top of the Pops 1975 Christmas Special, dancing to the Stylistics’ I Can’t Give You Anything. With a cheesy introduction from Noel Edmunds and Tony Blackburn.

Pan’s People – I Get a Kick out of You

Top of the Pops, 10 October 1974: Pan’s People dance to I Get a Kick out of You by Gary Shearston.

Pan’s people in white lacey undies dancing to Gary Shearston, singing an old Cole Porter classic. Rescued from oblivion by the sainted Grant Watkins, who included this routine on his demonstration tape, presumably because of the sophisticated multi-layered blue-screen matting & feedback effects: the fact that it features Pan’s People in stockings and suspenders would have had nothing to do with it. Oh no.

Gary Shearston turns out to be an Australian folk singer: so that accounts for the slightly unusual accent in this performance, when I had always taken to be some sort of cockney.

From the old blog, Monday, 24 December 2012:

I’ve received an interesting video disk from a generous anonymous donor: labelled “BBC Demonstration Tape”, it contains various clips from BBC music and comedy shows from the seventies, including a few performances from Pan’s people and Legs & Co. Most of them are on the blog already, but here’s one we don’t have: Pan’s People dancing to I Get a Kick out of You.

From the line-up, this must be sometime in late 1974 or early 1975. I had idea who the singer is, but PattiforPM has identified him as Gary Shearston, and the TOTP date was October 10 1974. While the inserted clip of Dick Emery & Henry McGee is not ideal, let’s not look a gift horse in the mouth. At the end, we get the now-very-familiar “Beautiful Babs” clip from Porridge.

My donor is keen to give credit for the tape to the late Grant Watkins, who was also responsible for the BBC VT Department’s traditional christmas blooper tapes for 1978 and 1979 which both featured guest appearances from Legs & Co.

Merry Christmas and many thanks to my anonymous benefactor.

Pan’s People – Paperback Writer

Top of the Pops, 8 April 1976: Pan’s People dance to Paperback Writer by The Beatles.

Cherry, Mary, Ruth and Sue dance among paperback book racks of the sort only now seen in charity shops, clutching open books.

In early 1976, EMI re-launched* all of their Beatles singles catalogue, along with a new single release of Yesterday (already a hit in America in 1965, it was only originally released as an album and EP track in the UK). Here’s one of the couple that made it into the charts on relaunch, the 1966 hit Paperback Writer. The song had been kept alive in the public’s ear through its use as a theme tune to Read All About It, Melvyn Bragg’s BBC book review programme.

* Realunched, as opposed to re-released: all the singles had remained available in the EMI catalogue since their original release: none had been deleted.

Pan’s People – The Tango’s Over

Top of the Pops 13 September 1974:
Pan’s People dance to The Tango’s Over with singer Mick Robertson

Here’s the last of this batch of rare 1974 Pan’s people Performances. If you’re old enough to remember this, you’ll probably remember this singer’s day job as the presenter of ITV kids’ show Magpie. And should someone not have told him to stick to that day job?

The song is clearly in a key that’s just a little too high for him: which might be understandable in a karaoke situation, but this is after all his own record. And his rabbit-in-the-headlights stage fright performance here might be understandable in an amateur performer thrust on the stage, but he’s a seasoned showbiz performer, well used to the TV studio.

Still, what better way to mask his inadequacy than shove Pan’s people in fromt of him?

Choreography-wise, I suppose there’s not much else you do with a tango tune that’s got “Tango” in the title. But flick builds a reasonable entertaining routine around the song.

My thanks again to the anonymous donor of these routines.

I think this is Pans people’s last dance on TOTP, not sure though. Then Ruby Flipper took the lead for a little time in 1976. The fist time I saw this clip in 76, Ruth looks really upset, close to tears doing her solo dance, I was always wondering why this was so, until I saw this clip on UK Gold in 1993, then I found out it was her last dance was Pans. Her being upset, shows her total commitment and love of being with Pans and being a dancer. Have to mention, A very young Sue looks cute hear as always, and matured beautifully every year. Nice post. Benja 🙂

Pan’s People – Papa Was A Rolling Stone

Top of the Pops, 25 january 73:
Pan’s People dance to Papa Was A Rolling Stone by The Temptations

It’s blue screen time, as Pan’s People get a bit lost in the video effects as they dance to The Temptations’ classic, in contrasting black & white outfits.

Thanls to Pansrubylegs for the YouTube post, and for also including some examples of just how creepy old Jimmy Savile could be.
